ImageThalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is offering a unique advanced MSc electronic (e)- learning course in Haemoglobinopathies together with University College London (UCL), beginning on the Academic Year of 2008.

This is a unique opportunity for health professionals from around the world to pursue a specialist qualification from a leading university, via distance learning. University College London (UCL), with a history and a contribution to education of more than 150 years, is part of the University of London.  A university with high academic standards and an excellent reputation in distance and electronic (e)-learning courses, all led by  internationally recognised experts and taught by distinguished faculties.

ImageThe MSc in Haemoglopinopathies is a challenging course, launched for the first time and is specially designed to offer to interested health professionals an advanced postgraduate degree from  wherever they live without interruption of family or work responsibilities.

“ Our dreams are not in the stars – they are in our minds and in our hearts” Senator J William Fulbright

This course is a joint venture between UCL and Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), a patient/parent-driven organisation established in 1986 and working in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1996. Today TIF represents the interests of many hundreds of thousands of patients via 98 member associations from over 60 countries of the world, promoting their rights to a good quality of life and optimal medical and other care.

Course Objectives
To acquire knowledge and experience and to develop skills for the effective control, including the prevention and holistic management, of haemoglobinopathies - red blood cell disorders, that contribute significantly to the global public health burden. The objective for launching this course is very closely related to the mission of TIF, which is “the promotion of equal access to quality medical care for every patient with a haemoglobin disorder across the world.” More specifically, this course focuses on:

  • Offering training on the holistic care of haemoglobinopathies to health professionals practicing in various parts of the world
  • Bringing together the expertise of clinicians, scientists and researchers involved in the control of thalassaemia from a diverse range of disciplines with the ultimate goal of preparing them to deliver innovation in clinical practice, research, education and training
  • Improving the health and quality of life of patients with thalassaemia, sickle cell disease and other severe haemoglobin disorders worldwide by educating international health professionals
  • Increasing awareness and knowledge of effective prevention programmes for haemoglobinopathies.
